Exploring Nature's Rhythms: A Fresh Perspective in Modern Expressionism
Born in Canberra, Tonya spent time as a child living in the United States before her family settled in Melbourne. As an adult Tonya has lived at different times in Canada and Papua New Guinea. She took up painting during the COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne and is self-taught.
With a bold and expressive style, Tonyaโs work transcends boundaries, inviting viewers into a captivating world where the interplay between nature and human experience, time and scale is explored through colour, movement, and emotion.
Tonya brings a unique tactile quality to her work, with delicate woodblock and found object prints, infusing each piece with a sense of pattern and texture. The beauty of nature is reflected in her work in vivid watercolour, gouache, and ink.
While Tonya draws on the traditions of expressionism, she also embraces elements of the modern and abstract, with layers of colour and pattern that reveal new details with each viewing. Her compositions often blur the line between representation and abstraction, exploring liminal spaces where reality, memory and imagination intersect.
Tonya is a member of the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria.
