This tree was struck by lightning years ago on a neighbouring property. I used to drive by and see the colour of the dam with Azolla growing in it and the dead, white tree. One day I just had to stop and get a photo as the sky was so blue and the contrast of colours drew me in. I knew I would paint it one day. Not long after I took the photo, the tree was stuck by lightning again and chopped down and still remains in a pile next to the dam. It was years before I got back to it and did this pastel but I am so very glad I caught the image before the tree was no more.
