Artwork Description

This detailed watercolour painting captures the weathered facade of a Soviet-era apartment building, with the word ā€œŠ”Š Š£Š–Š‘Šā€ (ā€œFriendshipā€) displayed prominently in faded Cyrillic script. The scene is rich with texture—peeling paint, rust-stained metal, and crumbling brick—evoking a sense of both nostalgia and quiet resilience.

Drawing on themes of memory, decay, and the passage of time, the piece explores the lived experience of post-Soviet urban spaces. The intricate rendering of architectural details reflects the artist’s architectural background, while the softened, expressive use of watercolour imbues the structure with emotional depth. This work is both a document and a meditation—a tribute to places that may appear forgotten, yet hold stories of community, history, and everyday life.

Artist Bio

I’m an artist and an architect with a background in fine art and architectural design. I studied at Prokofiev’s School of Art in Vladivostok, Russia, and later earned a Master’s degree in Architecture from Queensland University of Technology. My work brings together these two worlds—art and architecture—often blending technical precision with creative exploration.

I enjoy experimenting with different techniques and materials, but I’m always drawn back to built forms and landscapes. Whether I’m sketching or painting, I find inspiration in structures—especially those that are worn, weathered, or abandoned. There’s something deeply compelling about ruins and the stories they carry, a kind of quiet beauty in places that have been shaped by time.

From a young age, I have been captivated by the realm of science fiction literature. Growing up in Russia, I immersed myself in classic sci-fi novels, allowing my imagination to flourish and my passion to deepen. In my mind, I crafted intricate worlds that blended elements of Russian folklore—such as whimsical huts and mythical creatures—with the stark reality of Soviet brutalist architecture, all while echoing the remnants of a nation’s dreams of reaching for the stars.

My art is a dynamic reflection of my life’s journey, constantly evolving in response to new experiences and inspirations. This collection serves as a poignant illustration of an immigrant’s memories—not merely of a physical home, but of the vibrant feelings and excitement that linger from cherished moments in the past. Through my work, I invite viewers to explore the intersection of nostalgia and imagination, where the essence of home is redefined by the emotions we carry with us.
