Artwork Description

Stairs are a passageway that unite us to a place, idea, or state of being - like a maze of self-discovery through movement and sight. Perhaps a secret passage way between levels, or the chance to evolve, to self-discover or take a risk. Whichever route you take, don't look up - there's so much to explore down here.

This painting is partly 3D in nature with layers of wood collage and woven wool to add shadows, texture and interesting detail. The painting continues around the sides and edges to enhance its presence and provide a different point of view as you move around the room.

Inspired by architecture and form, the composition, texture and colour in this work draws you in to explore further and let your mind wonder. A great conversation starter and burst of colour that will elevate any space.

Artist Bio

Hi there! I am Valentina Albert, a contemporary mixed media Artist based in the regional town of Yass, NSW.

Holding a Diploma of Visual Arts from the Canberra Institute of Technology, my art practice is in contemporary painting and sculpture, exploring the theme of ESCAPISM.

My creative urge came about as a youngster when my class was given an art project to transform the room into an underwater habitat. The transformation seemed like a big deal as a kid - seeing so much colour and sculpture gave me an overwhelming sense of excitement, play and discovery, as if I had been transported to another world. It was from this experience that I developed a keen interest for the arts, buildings and spaces, so I continued art classes and later pursued studies in Interior Design.

Learning about the principles and elements of design was even more fascinating to me, and I was particularly absorbed in drawing and making models. Recognising that I yearned to be creative physically by hand, my formal studies in Visual Arts then took their course.

Combining my love of art and design, my work reflects a curiosity and deep fascination for architecture, form, space (as our environment) and the psychology of colour. Inspiration often comes from buildings and natural environments. I am specifically interested in the form, patterns, voids, and light that these structures and spaces array - and the way in which they evoke emotions in us.

The process and journey in creating is most significant to me. Often introducing collage and weaving into my paintings, I enjoy taking an improvised approach in fusing form, colour, materiality and pattern to explore perspective and space through abstraction.

Allowing my mind to wonder through process results in compositions of curiosity, play and extended exploration, allowing individuals to spark their own visual and emotional connection to my work.
