Holding Ground is inspired by the strength, resilience and quiet presence of Australia’s water monitors. I’m drawn to the wildlife that shares our environment, particularly the creatures that are often overlooked despite their incredible beauty and character.
The painting explores the monitor’s powerful, almost prehistoric presence against the textures of the Australian landscape. I wanted to capture a quiet moment of confidence and belonging—an animal completely at home in its environment.
With a focus on intricate detail, texture and light, Holding Ground invites the viewer to slow down and appreciate the remarkable wildlife around us.
Holding Ground was selected as a finalist in the 2026 Stanthorpe Art Prize
