“Dried Natives in Glass Jar on hand dye Cotton” is my first attempt at oil on linen canvas. I was always too nervous and daunted by the idea of using oil as I have usually stuck to acrylic in past pieces. This piece is not like most of my pieces conveying the beauty of nature. This piece is more personal, it represents my fear but “all in” attitude, I decided if I was going to paint in oil I might as well make it as challenging as possible (counter intuitive, stupid or brave?) Learning how to store oil, wash, mix and paint has definitely come as a natural flow from acrylics.
Starting with painting the fabric I hand dyed myself was a tedious task that took around 6 sittings over a 2 month period between study and work! Next moving onto the glass was just as daunting however I found it exhilarating and extremely satisfying as I watched the light and shadows form reflection and illusion! Finally finishing with the comfort of the gum, dyed and natural banksia felt so joyous and confidence boosting. This piece will always hold a special place being my first. However I look forward to future pieces and the experiences through out.
