Artwork Description

I think of my photographs as memory fragments - distorted interpretations of reality. The Australian landscape inspires me, in particular, the Outback, which reminds me of summer holidays, spent visiting my grandparents in the American Southwest. As a recent citizen of Australia, I am forging new connections to place and space. I long to be a part of the Australian landscape, yet hold onto the memories that have shaped my sense of self.

Artist Bio

Vanessa Bertagnole, b.1983, United States, is an award-winning photographer and artist based in Brisbane. Her work is mainly concerned with the elusiveness of memory and mediated forms of communication. In abstracting digital forms, she wishes to blur the boundaries of photography and challenge the role memory and media play in shaping our identities and perceptions of reality. In a time where we rely on digital technology to deliver is accuracy and consistency, Vanessa enjoys experimenting with the artistic potential found in its failure. Her documentary work focuses on cross-cultural issues and the ways in which cultural and social identities are expressed in everyday life. Vanessa regularly exhibits throughout Australia as well as overseas and has been a finalist in many national art prizes.
