Artwork Description

This series reimagines the Australian landscape through a contemporary Cubist lens, breaking down familiar scenery into essential shapes, colours, and movement. Eucalyptus trees, rolling mountains, waterways, and open country are transformed into geometric fragments that reflect both structure and rhythm.

A grounded palette of deep greens, ochres, soft creams, and subtle blues evokes the natural tones of the land, while small kangaroos appear throughout the compositions as quiet symbols of life, scale, and connection to place.

Each work is inspired by the landscapes that have shaped my experience of Australia, interpreted through my own visual language of abstraction and geometry.

A modern reflection of the Australian landscape — simplified, reimagined, and emotionally connected to place.

Artist Bio

Vasil (Vasily) Kulchenkois a contemporary artist based in Western Australia, creating original paintings inspired by the vast landscapes, coastline and unique light of Australia. His work transforms familiar scenery into refined minimalist compositions using geometric forms, rich texture and a carefully balanced palette.

Originally trained in classical and impressionist painting, Vasil has developed a distinctive contemporary style that combines abstraction, cubist influences and expressive texture. Rather than capturing every detail, his paintings focus on atmosphere, space and the emotional connection between people and the Australian landscape. Small figures or wildlife often appear within expansive compositions, inviting viewers to pause and imagine their own place within the scene.

Drawing inspiration from the Karri forests of Pemberton, the rugged coastline of Western Australia, the outback and Australia's iconic wildlife, each painting seeks to evoke a sense of calm, openness and quiet beauty. Heavy palette-knife textures and confident brushwork create depth and movement while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic suited to contemporary interiors.

Vasil's work is held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally. Every painting is an original, created with professional-quality materials and designed to bring warmth, character and a lasting connection to the Australian landscape into the home.
