Artwork Description

This contemporary painting presents a stylised vision of the Australian desert, where minimal forms and vivid colours come together to create a powerful sense of place. A glowing sun dominates the deep blue sky, casting light across abstracted rock formations rendered in warm ochres, burnt orange, and earthy browns.

In the foreground, two kangaroos stand as quiet observers within the vast landscape, adding a subtle narrative and a strong connection to the Australian identity. The simplified shapes and textured brushwork emphasise both the physical terrain and the emotional stillness of the scene.

The composition balances bold geometry with organic elements, creating harmony between land, sky, and wildlife. The use of colour is both expressive and symbolic—contrasting cool and warm tones to evoke heat, space, and serenity.

This artwork invites the viewer to pause and reflect, capturing the timeless beauty and quiet isolation of the outback in a modern, minimalist style.

Artist Bio

Vasil (Vasily) Kulchenkois a contemporary artist based in Western Australia, creating original paintings inspired by the vast landscapes, coastline and unique light of Australia. His work transforms familiar scenery into refined minimalist compositions using geometric forms, rich texture and a carefully balanced palette.

Originally trained in classical and impressionist painting, Vasil has developed a distinctive contemporary style that combines abstraction, cubist influences and expressive texture. Rather than capturing every detail, his paintings focus on atmosphere, space and the emotional connection between people and the Australian landscape. Small figures or wildlife often appear within expansive compositions, inviting viewers to pause and imagine their own place within the scene.

Drawing inspiration from the Karri forests of Pemberton, the rugged coastline of Western Australia, the outback and Australia's iconic wildlife, each painting seeks to evoke a sense of calm, openness and quiet beauty. Heavy palette-knife textures and confident brushwork create depth and movement while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic suited to contemporary interiors.

Vasil's work is held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally. Every painting is an original, created with professional-quality materials and designed to bring warmth, character and a lasting connection to the Australian landscape into the home.
