Artwork Description

Sunlit Horizons is a contemporary abstract interpretation of the Australian outback, blending minimalist design with figurative storytelling. Rolling hills unfold in layers of ochre, rust, gold, deep blue, and soft ivory, creating a landscape that feels both familiar and dreamlike. A radiant orange sun dominates the sky, casting warmth across the composition and evoking the vast openness of Australia's interior.

Small kangaroo silhouettes are scattered throughout the scene, providing a subtle narrative and a sense of scale within the expansive environment. Their presence transforms the geometric landscape into a uniquely Australian visual journey, celebrating the quiet beauty of native wildlife.

Rich textural surfaces and hand-drawn gestural lines soften the structured forms, adding depth, movement, and an organic quality to the work. The balance between bold colour blocking and delicate mark-making creates a harmonious composition that feels modern yet deeply connected to the land.

This artwork explores themes of space, belonging, and connection to nature, offering a sophisticated and contemporary vision of the Australian landscape that is both striking and serene. Perfect for modern interiors, it invites viewers to pause, wander, and discover new details within its layered horizons.

Artist Bio

Vasil (Vasily) Kulchenkois a contemporary artist based in Western Australia, creating original paintings inspired by the vast landscapes, coastline and unique light of Australia. His work transforms familiar scenery into refined minimalist compositions using geometric forms, rich texture and a carefully balanced palette.

Originally trained in classical and impressionist painting, Vasil has developed a distinctive contemporary style that combines abstraction, cubist influences and expressive texture. Rather than capturing every detail, his paintings focus on atmosphere, space and the emotional connection between people and the Australian landscape. Small figures or wildlife often appear within expansive compositions, inviting viewers to pause and imagine their own place within the scene.

Drawing inspiration from the Karri forests of Pemberton, the rugged coastline of Western Australia, the outback and Australia's iconic wildlife, each painting seeks to evoke a sense of calm, openness and quiet beauty. Heavy palette-knife textures and confident brushwork create depth and movement while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic suited to contemporary interiors.

Vasil's work is held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally. Every painting is an original, created with professional-quality materials and designed to bring warmth, character and a lasting connection to the Australian landscape into the home.
