Artwork Description

Rendered in watercolour and ink while the paper was deeply saturated, a sense of fluidity, life and spontaneity has been created. This is accentuated by applying ink with a bamboo stick, which also captures the personality of the bird. The pink-throated twinspot comes from the finch family and lives in Southern Africa. Its Latin, scientific name is 'hypargos margaritatus', which translates literally as ' a small monster with a hundred pearly eyes'!

Artist Bio

I've always been drawn to pattern in nature and it comes naturally to me to try to capture my experience of the world through visual language.  Representing the true nature of things is important to me, this may be through realistic rendering, quick mark-making or a creative reimagining that captures how something 'feels'.  I explore this in a range of ways.  Although my work may appear varied, I believe that in all my depictions my aim is to capture the true nature of the subject.

I like how viewers approach my art in different ways, seeing things differently to each other and the aspects that reach out to me.  It's fascinating how people engage and notice things that I hadn't intended.  I have found that everyone notices different shapes within my work and I realise that there are many ways of 'seeing'.
