Artwork Description

An ode to the electric, unabashed beauty of iris on a summer day, the velvet of its petals, its veins visible even in indirect daylight. This flower does not seek to blend in, it springs forth bright, vain, astonishing.

This work was shortlisted as a finalist in the Hunter's Hill Art Prize 2022 and exhibited at the Town Hall for two weeks. It is twice-varnished, framed in a beautiful white frame and ready to hang.

Artist Bio

I am a self-taught artist. I began my journey painting porcelain in Geneva in 2014 but have since been painting in acrylics, oils and watercolours. I am inspired by everyday beauty, the kind that is ever-present in my surroundings. I am deeply moved by the transformative power of light in my physical space and this drives my passion to paint. I love painting scenes of natural beauty as much as I enjoy painting urban scenes. In these works, my aim is to convey an emotional response to a physical scene rather than merely presenting an accurate representation of it. In both my still lifes and landscape paintings, light and shadow are key players.

I do not restrict myself to a specific style or subject matter, deriving a keen enjoyment from all avenues of creative work. My abstract paintings are works of meditation that come about as a result of obsessive internal dialogues about modern life, the passage of time and faith.

I have travelled and lived for many years in Europe, the Middle East and Pakistan so the influences in my work are varied and diverse. Follow my journey on Instagram @artwaqeea or check out my website https://www.artwaqeea.com/
