This artwork is inspired by the tidal zone. The shapes and forms encountered in this zone provide a rich source of inspiration and fascination. The art itself is a multiple series of washes and texture which is rubbed back to reveal underlying layers and then overlayed with more detail.
The underpainting is highly textured acrylic paint onto which further layers of acrylic are applied. Some of the washes have a pearl additive which reflects light making these works hard to document as the surface effects change according to position and external lighting. This is highly textured as can be seem in the detail images.
The patterns and textures of eroded and fragmented rock are projected onto the canvas through the lens of experience and interpretation. Anyone who has spent time around rock pools would be aware of the micro systems that inhabit these spaces and how absorbing such an experience can be.
