Artist Bio

Biography
Wendy Habraken is a visual artist based in Latrobe Valley, Victoria. In 1985 Wendy completed her Diploma of Visual Arts and in 2020 her Master of Visual Arts through Federation University.
The principal theme of Wendy’s work delves into the realms of emotions, provoked by memories and experiences, how we express them and try to conceal them. She also explores the repercussions human’s interactions and domination have on others, the environment, and related issues of extinction.
A realist artist she works with drawing and printmaking mediums. Her work can be confronting as she articulates her ideologies using objects symbolic of containment and death which includes the use of dead birds. Working predominantly with black and white accentuates the darkness and power our emotions have. Her work is inspired by ‘La Mort’ and ‘Memento mori’.
2022 Wendy was invited to exhibit with PICES (Phillip Island Contemporary Exhibition Space) in ‘PICES hoard Exhibition’ surrounding the construction of Cowes Cultural and Community Centre, Philip Island. In 2021 Wendy became a member of C.A.R.E (Concerned Artists Resisting Extinction) exhibiting at Gippsland Art Gallery Sale, and East Gippsland Gallery Bairnsdale. In 2022 her drawing ‘la mort’ was selected for ‘Fragile Earth - Extinction’ at Gippsland Art Gallery, this work was integrated into Gippsland Art Gallery’s permanent collection.
2017 till 2022 Wendy was Course Co-Ordinator and lecturer in Drawing and studio technician at Federation University Gippsland Campus. Wendy is currently employed by Latrobe Regional Gallery as casual Gallery Technician, while focusing on her art career.
