Dumbo Octopus

This artwork was created for my 2018 solo exhibition, 'Creatures of the Deep' at the Salamanca Arts Centre in Hobart.
Dumbo Octopus Facts:
Scientific name: Grimpoteuthis spp.

Found in the ‘Abyssal Zone’. (Mainly found 3,000m to 4,000m below the surface, but may be found as deep as 7,000m)

Did you know? Named after the Disney movie character of similar appearance, the Dumbo octopus moves through the water by flapping its ear-like fins, using its legs to steer itself. It is also the deepest living species of octopi in the world!

This painting is acrylic on stretched canvas, sealed with gloss varnish. It is wired and ready to hang.

The gallery-wrapped edges of the canvas are painted, so there is no need for framing.

Wendy now lives in Hobart, Tasmania, but she grew up in tropical North Queensland, so the flora and fauna of that region feature heavily in her work. She works mainly with heavy-bodied acrylics, applying the paint impasto style to create texture. She loves using bright colours, and is not afraid to get her hands dirty, as she often uses her hands and fingers instead of brushes!
