Artwork Description

This artwork was created for my 2018 solo exhibition, 'Creatures of the Deep' at the Salamanca Arts Centre in Hobart.
Reef Manta Ray Facts:
Scienific name: Manta alfredi.

Inhabits the ‘Sunlight Zone’ (found in surface water around coral reefs).

Did you know? Unlike many fish species, mantas give birth to live young! After a 12-13 month gestation period every second year, mother mantas give birth to just one or two pups, which come out rolled up like burritos!
This painting is acrylic on stretched canvas, sealed with gloss varnish. It is wired and ready to hang.

The gallery-wrapped edges of the canvas are painted, so there is no need for framing.

Artist Bio

Wendy now lives in Hobart, Tasmania, but she grew up in tropical North Queensland, so the flora and fauna of that region feature heavily in her work. She works mainly with heavy-bodied acrylics, applying the paint impasto style to create texture. She loves using bright colours, and is not afraid to get her hands dirty, as she often uses her hands and fingers instead of brushes!
