This artwork was featured in the artist's 2024 solo exhibition, Living Ghosts: Above and Below the Waves, held at the Salamanca Arts Centre in Hobart, Tasmania. The exhibition focused on Tasmania's threatened and endangered marine species, highlighting the urgent need for conservation to prevent their disappearance.
This piece depicts the Great White Shark (Archarodon carcharias), which is classified as Vulnerable both in Tasmania and globally by the IUCN.
The elusive Great White Shark can be found in oceans around the world, including the waters off Tasmania. While the total global population of Great Whites remains uncertain, available data suggests a decline in numbers. The species faces multiple threats, including sport fishing, poaching, bycatch, entanglement in beach nets, and the impact of shark control programs.
Conservation efforts are underway, with international protections and regulations in place to limit shark catch and trade.
Created using mixed media (paper, gouache and acrylic) on recycled board, the artwork is ready to hang.
In support of conservation efforts to protect Tasmania’s endangered marine life, 25% of the proceeds from this piece will be donated to the Australian Marine Conservation Society.
