Guardians began in 2023, with a process of pouring paint over the canvas and taking imprints of leaves to create organic textures in the surface. This initial layer set the foundation for a composition inspired by the cosmologies of healing from the Amazon rainforest.

In the foreground, the painting features animals and plants, each chosen for their significance in Amazonian healing traditions. Each plant depicted is a recognized healing plant of the Amazon, used by Indigenous and Mestizo healers to cure sickness and restore balance. The flowers and leaves of these plants are used both externally to bathe patients and internally to assist in healing and curing. The plants and animals are seen as allies which assist and amplify patients and healers healing and curing.
