My name is Zhen Zhang (Jane) and I am a self-taught homebased amateur Chinese artist who was born in Guangzhou, China (near Hongkong), I am specialised in using watercolour. Honestly, I was never passionate about painting at all but decided to challenge myself with something that I used to not very like as I am getting closer to retirement, pretty much just to keep myself busy.
I started off self-directed learning with watercolour since 2018 based on books and online resources but I felt like it took me to nowhere for half a year, apart for me to realize my passion, enthusiasm and the deep love towards painting. I enjoyed how my mind was so calm and peaceful while painting and that I could indulge the whole me into my art pieces. In 2019, I joined an online painting institution and started to professionally and thoroughly learning some basic painting skills towards animals, landscaping and characters. But still, I felt bounded by all the rules and techniques, and it is never enough for me to express myself loosely.
During my explore in the ocean of paintings, I randomly came across the notable Rose Garden by a well-known Chinese watercolour painter and professor Mr. Youwei Huang and it was shocking to me how vibrant and vivid his paintings were. His paintings inspired me to discover the natural beauty of the world we are currently living in which triggered my eager and my bursting energy to replicate and present them in my paintings with my own interpretation. In 2022 my dream of studying from and mentoring by Mr. Huang had finally come true; and ever since then, I have upskilled and specialised in flower and landscaping painting.
At the end of 2023, Mr. Huang’s postgraduate student also hosted a painting course majoring in antique paintings which I am always mesmerised by Chinese antiques and here I am, another chapter of my painting course just started. I love antiques as each antique itself is a story and tells a history. I admired how watercolour can present with an overall antiquated and vintage look of the artwork and through the extra precision and patience required during the creation process, I enjoy immersing myself in the sense of vicissitudes of antique.
My creation follows a principle of maintain and restore the natural and realistic beauty of each theme mainly in flowers, landscaping and antique at this stage, but I have never hesitated at exploring any new themes that I could find myself interested in. I am also open-minded and willing to try any other themes so that my painting skills can become more comprehensive.
