Artwork Description

This work is part of my Falling Women series. These paintings were completed during my Artist Residence at Chateau d'Orquevaux in France. The series explores the way women fall: both in terms of societal expectation of women but also more simply, reflecting our use of the word "Falling" or "fallen."
By way of example we commonly use phrases such as "fallen pregnant, falling out, falling foul, falling down" and so on.

Le monde pèse lourdement (The world weighs heavily) is a figurative work depicting a couple under a dark shadow. The woman looks distressed, overwhelmed, she covers her ears...the world is weighing heavily on her. The work is modernised by abstraction and the use of bright colours. This (and others in this series) was inspired by many museum and gallery visits throughout Europe and by my reading of poetry and other literature.

The use of vibrant colour in this work is a departure from my usual practice and reflects a period of personal growth and change. Colour reflects both my own interior world but is also a powerful way to speak to the viewer. In this work the peripheral colour represents hope.

This painting is gallery wrapped and ready to hangIt will be exhibited at my Falling Women exhibition at Mulbury Gallery in Highett from 8-20 Feb 2019 and will be available again for sale after that time.

Artist Bio

Sharon is a visual artist from Melbourne, best known for her bold use of colour and abstracted figuration. Working predominantly with acrylic paint, she also likes to experiment with oils, pastels, ink and collage. Themes explored through Sharon's work include human rights, social justice, mental illness and feminism.

Sharon says "My work is influenced by many things across the personal, the political and the aesthetic. Whilst I paint landscapes, portraits and abstract paintings, I am most particularly interested in figurative works. Body language, story telling and the diversity of human experience are all themes you will find in my work."

In 2018 she was selected for an international artist residency at Chateau d' Orquevaux in France where she worked on a series of paintings exploring female identity and its intersection with language. Many of the works from this period were exhibited in Melbourne in her "Falling Women" Exhibition. "
Sharon's paintings are held in private collections across Australia, in the UK, France , Singapore, Canada and the USA. 3 of her paintings are held in the permanent collection at Chateau d' Orquevaux.

She is the artist in residence at Liquid Amber Press, a publishing company that works at the intersection of visual arts and poetry, and is represented by Kelli Lundberg Art in Victoria and Satch and Co in NSW
