…
A drizzling morning did the bus take us.
Townsville terminal to Mission Beach.
There by ferry to Dunk Island Jetty.
Three days five of us crammed in a tent for two.
Myself, Benny, You, Brooke and Shera.
Two boxes of shapes biscuits our only food, hungry we all were.
A shared box of red wine numbed the hunger pains.
Three fish I somehow caught on a hand reel
Fishing in chest high water
Did I exit quickly after the reef shark swam by,
Shapes biscuits my bait.
Bushwalking throughout the island.
Mosquitos fed on us.
Sneaking into the Resort jacuzzi did we after smoked fish dinner.
They asked were we guests. Yes we did say
And we’re enjoying our first class $5 overnight tent stay.
Got to look the part to be the part.
Penniless Japanese surfers sleeping on the beach.
A windy overcast early morning walk on the south side beach.
Back to JCU campus to make up for skipped classes
Or not,
And free cafeteria food at Western Halls
All the small things,
Were all the big things.
Oh rejoice in thy youth young man.
