Smugglers Cove is situated at the end of Grandfather's Gully on the NSW South Coast. It is part of my regular cliff top walk and I am always inspired by the sandstone cliffs and the way the light plays on the cliff and reflects into the ocean.
Grandfather's Gully has a rich indigenous history with middens and ochre sources nearby. It was also a source of timber for spears, a meeting place and a place for ceremony. The rich indigenous history adds to the sense of meaning and importance of this part of the south-east. The European history intersects the indigenous history but one gets the sense that there are many untold secrets here.
In this painting I have used a palette knife in broad strokes to show the movement of the water and cloud and the hard edges and solid chunkyfeatures of the cliff. It results in a thick almost impasto style surface.
I think I have captured the scene and the years of history in this painting.
