A large painting‚ with a large feeling. The composition‚ the scale‚ and the high contrast (between the sky and the structures) are inspired by the classic films of John Ford‚ and especially by his work in Monument Valley. Here‚ though‚ the natural monuments are man-made: enormous light bulbs‚ dark against the sky. These are recurring motifs in my paintings. The lone figure in the foreground (a director with a movie camera on tripod) is dwarfed by the location. It's a romantic image‚ and also references the works of Caspar David Friedrich.
The brushwork‚ particularly of the sky‚ is very bold and thick (though the neutral tones mean that this is not too apparent at first). The palette runs from very dark brown to white.
The measurements given are for the canvas. A black timber frame is included‚ approx. 3 cm thick.
