I started painting the 'Unpopular Penguin' series in October 2015. In the two years since then, I have painted 200, and they continue to defy their name and have an appeal to art collectors and book lovers around Australia and the world. They've been included in solo and group shows at some of Australia's best galleries, and included in the Blacktown City Art Prize and the Gallipoli Art Prize.
The original inspiration for the first painting came from Jasper Johns' 'Flag' series of paintings, whereby he took an instantly recognisable symbol and transformed it into a textured, layered abstract painting. The Penguin books have always appealed to me, and it should be noted that before I was a full-time painter I worked in a book shop for 15 years.
The surface is textured and built up in many layers, with a matte varnish finish. The sides are painted and it will not need to be framed.
I've been very fortunate with these paintings, thank you to all who have supported the series!
