Melbourne used to be widely known for its old H-Class trams. These days that reputation exists only in the rhetoric of self-serving politicians who continue to ignore the reality that this part of the city's proud history has been comprehensively trashed.
London's iconic buses and taxis serve as a reminder of that short-sightedness, as do San Francisco and Hong Kong's trams and New York's taxis.
All we have is garish advertising hoardings on wheels.
