1. Graham Gercken

Graham Gercken is an oil painter based in Lithgow, NSW. Located in a beautiful valley just west of the Blue Mountains, he is surrounded by endless rolling hills and inspiration. His artistic career had humble beginnings. Specifically, he began by selling paintings to the buses of tourists visiting an Aboriginal Dreamtime legend called The Three Sisters. Now, Graham is a Rising Star on Bluethumb. He applies oil paint alla prima (wet-on-wet), a technique commonly utilised by impressionist artists.

2. Susan Trudinger

Susan Trudinger hails from Canberra and has created a body of work dedicated to bringing visual pleasure and beauty to her viewers. Her paintings explore the natural world’s many colours and shapes. Susan is a versatile multi-media artist who works in a variety of mediums, including acrylics, gouache, watercolour pencils, ink, and charcoal, which allows her to bring depth and texture to her paintings. Susan’s style has been heavily influenced by the works of Arthur Boyd and Brett Whitely, two highly influential Australian landscape artists.

3. Annie Hawkins

Annie Hawkins loves to escape the hustle and bustle of Sydney’s Upper North Shore. She travels to remote parts of the Australian countryside and finds solitude and scenes of inspiration. This Bluethumb Art Prize 2020 finalist says she loves switching off from everything and studying the natural surroundings’ shapes, tones and colours. “I instinctively see character and soul in houses, animals, trees. Moody, lonely landscapes appeal to me, and this is often reflected in my paintings,” says Annie.

4. Kate Gradwell

Kate Gradwell is a landscape artist that explores how sunlight and colour play in the natural world. Born and raised in England, Kate studied the sciences and received a PhD in Chemistry from Oxford University. Surprisingly, in 2016, her career trajectory changed when Kate began painting full-time. Now living in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Kate’s Close to Home series reflects on the benefits of being in nature. Kate is a highly Collectable Artist who has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize and Bluethumb Art Prize three years in a row.

5. Lisa Turner

Can you believe this Sydney-based Featured Artist once shied away from the easel? Lacking self-confidence and pressure to get a “real job” led Lisa Turner to dissert her innate creative side and pursue Business and Marketing studies. Now, with the encouragement of her husband, Lisa shares her work with the world. Lisa’s most recent suburban collection of landscapes, Glimpse of the Shire, focuses on light and shape. With intense concentration, she employs a geometric approach to her painting, breaking the image down into bite-size elements of colour.

6. Alex Frayne

Alex Frayne, a photographer from London, is a Collectable Artist based in Adelaide, South Australia. At a young age, his passion for photography ignited with an 8mm camera and has evolved into a lifelong devotion and celebrated career behind the lens. One of his most recent accomplishments is publishing a book titled Landscapes of South Australia, which showcases pictures of Australia’s urban terrain. 7. Fangmin Wu

Fangmin Wu is an internationally exhibited and celebrated artist. He spent his early life in China, where he learnt the art of printmaking. Now a multi-disciplinary artist, Fangmin has a unique personal painting style. The Australian countryside, farms and rural townships inspire his landscapes. However, Fangmin doesn’t want to copy nature. His landscapes are an amalgamation of passion and personality, a refreshing view of the viewer’s world.

8. Amanda Carson

One glance at Amanda Carson’s landscapes, and it’s evident that she hails from Victoria’s High Country. Amanda’s moody oil paintings are a snapshot of her surrounding natural environment. She creates them using a minimal colour palette. Plus, the occasional pallet knife helps achieve movement and texture. A self-titled sky watcher, Amanda is inspired by the ever-changing cloud formations that fill her mountaintop view. “Sometimes gentle, sometimes wild; no two days are the same,” says Amanda.

9. Paul Davies

Paul Davies’ landscapes capture the intricacies of everyday scenes and elevate them to new heights by highlighting their inherent beauty. Through oil painting, he imbues each piece with intense light and shadow, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer in. As Davies explains, “I love observing light, its various effects, and how our perception affects how we think of what we see.” His passion is evident in each work, which invites viewers to pause and appreciate the world around them.

10. Laurie McKern

Laurie McKern resides in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, NSW and regularly engages in the art of oil painting on paper. She strives to depict a vibrant and energetic atmosphere in her creations. Through her impressionist-style landscapes, Laurie succeeds in evoking an intense emotional response from her audience. When it comes to landscapes, Laurie’s goal is to capture a particular moment in time, be it the effect of light and shadow or the sensation of an impending storm.
