Manis: the Latin genus for the African and Asian Pangolin. This artwork was created for a series of works entitled Periclitatus, Latin for endangered.

The Pangolin is the most trafficked mammal in the world due to the high demand for their scales and claws in traditional medicine. Sadly, similarly to the Rhino horn, the scales are made from keratin which has no medicinal properties at all. Their meat is considered a delicacy in some Asian countries and consumed as bush meat in some African countries.

There are eight different Pangolin species that are uniquely covered in tough, overlapping scales. These mammals eat ants and termites using an extraordinarily long, sticky tongue and are able to quickly roll themselves up into a tight ball when they feel threatened.

This drawing depicts a curled pangolin and has a very architectural look, despite being wildlife art.
