A still-life study of a Turban Shell in charcoal pencil and white ink.
This shell was a great subject for me to draw, it was a good size with plenty of detail and texture. The contoured ridges that surround the entire surface remind me of geological process that form land, so strong and absolute but so varying and unique.

The unfocussed areas of the shell help portray a sense of scale and bring the eye to the sharper focal points, while the recurring water theme of my still-life drawings brings this inanimate object back to life.

It’s interesting when I start a work, I spend time deciding how to compose the image and to lead the eye in the viewing of the final piece. This work developed in a way I wasn’t expecting in that, the finger like shapes that reach into the dark shadows near the centre were to be one of the darker subtleties to find, but became a main focal point and my favourite section to both create and look at.

As a self-taught artist over a 12-year career, Chris has developed a distinct vision in his work, whether it's an acrylic painting or his unique combination of charcoal & white ink drawing. He has been a finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize (South Australia), the Muswellbrook Art Prize (New South Wales), BBC Wildlife Artist Of The Year (UK) and Highly Commended in the Victor Harbor Art Show (South Australia).

Born in England in 1979, Chris spent his early years living internationally until his family resettled in London when he was a teenager. Chris loves to travel and at the age of 30 he traded Londons city-life, for the beaches of rural South Australia, where the lifestyle suits the time & focus he needs, to create works that take up to 200 hours.

Chris’ Hyperrealistic still-life art is inspired by nature, exploring fine detail and the sensitivity of light, within a balanced, contemporary composition. The passion given to this precise process results in artwork that is inspiring and emotive.
