Artwork Description

Pastel on paper

Signed on the front.

When Maria Rilke wrote his famous poem The Panther, it captured the hearts of the world.
Through a caged panther's eyes we see a world so dismal it shuts down the great cat's soul.
In this painting as in all my work he is now free, wandering the gardens of Eden.
My work is always a dedication to all animals and their journey to freedom.

All art by Christine Lawrence

Background reds and browns were first. In all my work I use charcoal to draw in my subject. then I rub most of the linework out just so I can see the edges. Then comes the paint. It is an organic process. Finally with an almost dry brush I place the light shafts over the whole work. In a mystical encounter, the horse and the bird engaged with each other in a spiritual dance, their energies intertwining, creating an ethereal harmony that transcended the boundaries of the physical world.I always begin with just an idea. Once I am satisfied that the drawing is accurate I then just the whole process become organic as I play around with colors and shapes.
