My main goal in creating art is to remind people to take a moment to look around them. I am inspired by nature and I try to bring the outside in. I am not attempting to portray an exact representation of the environment that I see, instead I try to capture the essence of a landscape while also stylizing it and making it my own. I like to use colour, pattern and repetition to portray the layers of foliage and vegetation that can be seen in landscapes.
In this collection I have taken inspiration from the Upper Yarra river catchment area. The Yarra River is an icon of Melbourne, it winds its way through the city and is often described as disgusting, dirty and poisoned. However if you travel just over an hour out of Melbourne and into the Yarra Valley an entirely different picture is shown. Up here the river is clean, picturesque and beautiful. This is the Yarra that I see every day and that I want people to experience. It has a pristine, untouched beauty to it that is a total contrast to the polluted murky Yarra that we see closer to Melbourne.
