This piece is an impressionist portrait of my wife using mixed media consisting of of white powder coated sheet metal and self adhesive velour. This steel is supported by wood crossmember to keep it rigid and flat.
I had the velour cut into hundreds of 2mm and 3mm strips and used these to create the image using straight lines across to metal surface.
All the velour is meticulously placed in straight lines and the piece is meant to be a little difficult to make out if you stand very close to it.
As you move back the image comes into focus and it becomes obvious what it is.
I worked from an edited and digitally enhanced photo to create the portrait.
I was inspired to do this piece of my wife as she is someone I very much admire. Her very special features make for an interesting subject for a portrait but as the title suggests, it's her eyes which capture her essence.
