Oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.
Signed on the front.
"As Stone" is from the series “Sonnets”, which explores the concepts of beauty, decay and time ever present in “Shakespeare’s Sonnets”.
The title “As Stone” is borrowed from Sonnet 94 –
“Who, moving others, are themselves, as stone,
Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow;”
This work is influenced by a portrait (by Master John 1544) of Mary I (Henry VIII’s daughter, also called Bloody Mary). I was interested in portraiture of the Elizabethan era and found her “steely” attitude intriguing. Sonnet text is written across the canvas and is clearly visible in the face. The surface pattern references the dress she is wearing.
This painting is ready to hang.
