My still lifes are predominantly inspired by my home and garden, and depict snippets of my daily life, the objects within moments that bring pleasure and make for a joyful life.
This piece was created around the daffodils, grown and picked from my garden and the beautiful, reflective charcoal vase. It refracts and reflects light in the most amazing ways. Here it sits a top a book about New Zealand and in the company of a young grapefruit (also from my garden).
This work is an example of my love of capturing and resolving the effect of light as it reflects and refracts on, and passes through vessels. In particular, those containing botanicals and the distortion that happens to the stems sitting within the water, as well as the surface of the book the bottle sits on, and the citrus within the composition.
I find citrus to be the most beautiful and significant family of fruit, particularly visually when cut and for their scent, vibrancy, and culinary uses, and so they often find their way into my still lifes.
This piece continues on my exploration of realistic representations of objects in a painterly manner. One that captures both the detail and the essence of the moment. It was a joy to paint.
