Artist Bio

Dear viewer, thanks for looking at my artworks.

I would describe myself as a mid career artist, best known for my brooding and emotive portraits, but more recently being recognised for my sometimes whimsical and sometimes misty, contemplative landscapes. It is both people and nature that resonate with me. A person's facial expression tells a story and my challenge is to go beyond a likeness and to portray the depth and essence of my subjects. Inspired by the Nillumbik landscape that I live and practice in, I find nature to often be so uplifting and/or hauntingly beautiful.

Working with oil paint and printmaking techniques, I aim to fully engage the senses, a reviewer describing my work as 'having both intensity and emotive power'. In terms of tools of the trade I am drawn to the depth that can be achieved, the intensity of pigment, and the slow progression of layers and drying time, that typically characterises oil paint. I have developed a fascination with pyrography, which I use in my landscapes. My artworks are all on (marine grade ply) wood.

Having attained my Bachelor in Fine Arts in the early nineties I have worked as an artist, an art therapist and an art educator. In 2023 my work has appeared in a UK arts calendar and I have had two solo landscape exhibitions in the same year. I have had several previous solo exhibitions and have been selected as a finalist in the Nillumbik Prize and Mission to Seafarers Art Prize. My work features in various private collections, and I am currently working on several commissions. My artistic practice is gathering momentum.
