The artist describes this painting as an exploration of belonging rather than pursuit. Although the girl appears to be chasing the shark, the scene is intentionally calm — a quiet, fluid exchange rather than a hunt. Inspired by freediving and the feeling of becoming weightless underwater, the artist wanted the human figure to feel native to the reef, not intrusive. The girl’s simple attire and long fins strip away any sense of performance or dominance, allowing her to move as naturally as the fish and currents around her.

Eugene’s practice reflects a lifelong affinity with nature.
