The monumental scale of the work is essential to its impact.
Each panel measures 120 × 120 cm, creating an overall composition of 360 × 120 cm—an extraordinary 3.6 metres in length. This unusual format allows the viewer to feel surrounded by the reef rather than simply observing it. The three panels establish their own rhythm and movement while remaining connected as one immersive underwater environment.
It invites the viewer on an endless journey of discovery, revealing new forms, hidden details and unexpected relationships each time the eye moves across its richly layered underwater world.
This painting is a celebration of abundance, diversity and the remarkable intelligence of the natural world. It reflects both my fascination with marine life and my desire to honour places that feel ancient, fragile and precious.
More than a representation of an underwater scene, the triptych is an invitation to pause, explore and reconnect with the wonder that exists beneath the surface.
My appreciation for nature comes from its endless ability to surprise us. The closer we look, the more detail we discover. Coral reefs are a perfect expression of this—they appear unified from a distance, yet they are made up of countless individual organisms, each with its own form, purpose and beauty. I wanted the work to offer the same experience: first to be absorbed by its scale and colour, and then to move closer and become lost within its many intricate details.
It was born from my enduring reverence for the natural world and the otherworldly splendour of coral reefs. I wanted to evoke the sensation of slipping beneath the surface and entering a realm suspended between reality and dream—serene, mysterious and yet vibrating with life. Here, colour becomes movement, form becomes rhythm, and every coral, fish and drifting current contributes to the quiet, intricate choreography of an underwater universe.
