Artwork Description

This painting grew from my fascination with the feeling of moving through a reef rather than simply observing it from a distance. I wanted the composition to carry the viewer forward through shifting layers of water, coral and shadow, creating the sense of entering a world whose scale and rhythm are completely different from our own. The reef is treated almost as a submerged landscape, with passages, formations and pockets of light gradually revealing themselves through the blue.

The two sea turtles became the central movement within the work. Their position suggests both companionship and independence: each follows its own path, yet they remain connected within the same current. Their calm, deliberate motion contrasts with the quick flashes of smaller fish around them, creating a balance between stillness and activity. Rather than portraying the turtles as isolated subjects, I wanted them to feel fully embedded within the life and structure of the reef.

Colour was used to express the ocean as something expansive but never empty. Turquoise and deep blue establish depth, while coral pinks, yellows and warmer earth tones introduce moments of life and illumination. The painting is ultimately about passage—moving through an environment that feels ancient, alive and quietly powerful, where every form belongs to a larger, interconnected rhythm.

Artist Bio

Eugene’s practice reflects a lifelong affinity with nature. It’s a contemporary exploration of the wildlife in which figurative perfection dissolves into the evocation of mysterious spaces and utilizes spontaneous yet equitable range of hue. “Nature is the source of my inspiration. Everything I manifest and render is focused on harmony within her laws.”
Eugene uses most vivid colors in a vigorous application to express the uniqueness and define representation of wildlife attractiveness. Extensive knowledge of mixed media enables him to develop a most distinctive and recognizable manner that bridges the gap between the traditional academic approach and modern abstract art. His creations are not limited to any one subject or medium and demonstrate his outstanding perception and ability to focus on capturing details. “Since I started drawing I have become increasingly interested in understanding the painter’s two most fundamental tools: light and color.”
Eugene Rubuls is a widely recognized international artist who has successfully exhibited in art shows and galleries around Europe, Asia and Australia. His commissioned art work can be found in private collections all around the world.
