Artwork Description

Etching on paper

Signed and numbered on the front.

This moody study is of the beautiful seed pod of the coastal banksia.

It is made using the mezzotint technique: a metal plate is evenly roughened (creating thousands of tiny burrs) and then slowly an image is created by manually scraping and polishing the roughened surface. Ink is rubbed onto the plate, and when the ink is slowly cleaned off, brighter spots emerge where the metal burrs have been removed and polished away.

The plate/image is 10 x 10 cm, on archival Hahnemühle 300 gsm printmaking paper (19 x 27 cm in size).

A foreground of five dark brown ants carrying quartz pieces across their nest, with plants framing the sides of the artwork and an abstract green treeline in the distance. This is a layered hand coloured linocut print of a pair of superb fairy-wrens (in sky blue and earthern plumage). The pair is framed by the delicate leaves of our local woodland clematis species (clematis microphylla) in a rich sanguine colour.A layered hand coloured linoprint of the brightly coloured imperial jezebel butterfly on an abstract red-orange etching of its food plant, a drooping mistletoe.A moody Christmas beetle portrait emerges from a solid black background. Around the main plate, a silver-grey linoprint title forms an environmental statement.
