ARTIST STATEMENT
These handsome finches were photographed on a recent guided bird photography tour to the NT. I had given up hope of getting close to these birds and it was only on the last day that I discovered a wonderful private sanctuary for guests behind the hotel where we were staying that there was a real "finch fest" happening!
The Mannikins were happily flitting around the pandanus, possibly taking advantage of the prickly leaves as some sort of protection from predators.
I couldn't wait to start painting these, as they have long been on my wish list of subjects. The early morning lighting and colours are a reminder of how incredible Northern Territory wildlife is.
Locally nomadic, these finches can form flocks of several hundred birds. They feed on grass seeds, usually on the stalk rather than on the ground. They nest in colonies, with the nests close together in grass clumps, sugar care or reeds. Chestnut-breasted Mannikins are highly sociable, flocking in large numbers outside the breeding season. They are found across northern and eastern coastal Australia, from the Kimberley (NT) to the Shoalhaven River, NSW. They are also found in New Guinea.
