Gertrude Street had magnificent shadows contrasting with the sunny light, creating a frame around the magnificent architecture of the Royal Exhibition Building .
When it was built, the Great Hall was the largest building in Australia, and the highest building in Melbourne. It is the only surviving Great Hall from the 19th-century and is still used for exhibitions. The domeβs design was influenced by Brunelleschiβs 15th-century cathedral in Florence.
