Artwork Description

ARTIST: George Pascalis
ARTWORK DESCRIPTION:
Still-life: Brother John’s banquet.
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas,
50cm (W) x 40cm (H)

Once again, Jan Davidszoon de Heem provided me with the inspiration for this painting ‘Brother John’s banquet’.

Jan Davidszoon was one of the best-known names of still-life painting in the art movement of the Dutch and Flemish Baroque painting school.

However, my style and brush strokes are more impressionistic rather than Flemish. Nonetheless, I maintain the traditional Flemish Baroque technique of using a lot of oil glazes to create a sense of mood in my paintings.

This is highly evident in this particular oil, where the low light ambiance from mid-tones to very dark shadows, simulate the nuance of 16th-century Dutch masters.

This composition was invented and composed by me from fifteen separate free sourced photographic libraries.

My painting is a tribute to my late brother, John Michael Pascalis, who delighted in entertaining our family and friends with his Christmas banquets.

As the eldest son of Greek migrant parents, he was the patriarch of the Pascalis family before his passing, a guiding light much loved and respected by us all.
