In this painting, I sourced historical images from the golden age of the 17th-century Dutch masters. And to that end, I composed and executed a new painting, reflecting my vision of that period's nuance.
The 16th-century Dutch painter, Jan Davidzoon de Heem, whom I have recently discovered, became my inspiration. Fascinated with his masterful, realistic technical craft, the intricate, moody, realistic technique he employs astonished me.
In the enlightenment of that research, I set about to paint this still-life painting ‘Still-life: Rabbit and Pheasant, Dutch kitchen’, exploring and educating myself on how Jan Davidzoon de Heem set about painting his still-life paintings.
My painting and composition deals with historical 17th-century Dutch Kitchen subject matter and references, observing the golden age of Dutch techniques; mood, low highlights, dark shadows and depth of field, which Jan Davidzoon de Heem employs in his famous masterpieces.
