In this painting, I sourced historical images from the golden age of the 16th-century Dutch masters. And to that end, I composed and constructed a new painting with my vision to reflect the nuance of that period.
The 16th-century Dutch painter, Jan Davidzoon de Heem, who I have recently discovered, became my inspiration. Fascinated with his masterful realistic technical craft––the intricate, moody, realistic technique he employs astonished me.
In the enlightenment of that research; I set about to paint this still-life painting “Still-life: Pheasant, Dutch kitchen” exploring and educating myself how Jan Davidzoon de Heem set about painting his still-life paintings.
My painting and composition deals with historical subject matter and references, observing the golden age of Dutch techniques; mood, low highlights, dark shadows, and depth of field, which Jan Davidzoon de Heem employs in his famous masterpieces.
