A painting by Kehinde Wiley at the Musee D’orsay in Paris totally blew me away. I love painting portraits and their work inspired me to paint this piece. Often young people are the depicted in portraiture so I felt it important to paint an older person. The background pattern was used to bring the person forward in the painting as well as interweaving through the figure.
