There is a nice subtle theme going on in this painting, and that is the red and green relationship. It is obvious with the red background and green foreground, but more quiet in the warm and cool of the onions. This is also played out in the basket with greens in the shade and shadow areas offset with warm light parts. The more notable story here is the textured and complex basket showing off the simple smooth surfaces of the onions, with both working to keep each in correct relationship.
I have a collection of cane baskets of various shapes and sizes, and find them great additions to still life paintings. This is a homely and universal subject which would be very pleasing hanging in the right place.
