Artwork Description

In my artwork The Peaceful Sea, I invite you to step into a serene yet thought-provoking moment where the tranquility of the sea meets the subtle intrusion of modern life. This piece was born from a quiet visit to a coastal pier, where the vast, shimmering ocean stretched out before me, its gentle waves lapping against weathered wooden pilings. The sky above was a soft blend of pastel blues and pinks, the horizon glowing with the promise the calm of dusk. I wanted to capture that stillness—the way the pilings stood like sentinels of time, their cracked surfaces telling stories of years spent resisting the sea’s embrace. But as I stood there, I noticed something else: a figure on the pier, seemingly lost in a phone call, his posture hunched, hand to ear, as if tethered to a world far beyond this peaceful scene.

In The Peaceful Sea, I’ve painted this figure—perhaps myself, or perhaps a reflection of anyone who has ever felt caught between the calm of nature and the demands of modern life. A figure stands on the pier, dressed in a light blue sweater and white shorts, his blonde hair tucked under a cap, holding a phone to his ear. The pier itself is marked with signs of human presence—a “No Diving” sign, a coiled red hose, and bold white letters warning “NO RUNNING NO JUMPING”—yet the figure’s focus is elsewhere, absorbed in their conversation.

The inspiration for this piece came from my own experiences of seeking solace by the sea, only to find myself pulled back into the bustle of daily life through the ever-present tether of technology. I wanted to explore that tension—the way we carry our distractions with us, even to the most peaceful places. The figure on the phone represents that paradox: standing amidst beauty, yet mentally elsewhere, connected to someone or something far away. In this peaceful setting, it feels almost out of place, a reminder that even in moments of stillness, we are often elsewhere in our minds. Yet, there’s a quiet beauty in that contrast. The figure’s presence adds a layer of narrative depth, making the scene not just about the sea’s tranquility but about how we experience it—sometimes fully, sometimes distractedly. The phone call could be a bridge to the outside world, a moment of connection across the vastness of the sea, or a subtle intrusion that pulls them away from the present. This ambiguity is intentional, sparking curiosity about their story and our own relationship with technology. I leave that open to interpretation, inviting viewers to project their own stories onto the scene.

For Collectors and Viewers, The Peaceful Sea can lift a room by offering a space for reflection. Its soothing palette of blues, greens, and soft pinks creates a calming atmosphere, while the figure on the pier sparks conversation. This piece transforms any space into a contemplative retreat, inviting viewers to pause, breathe, and consider their own balance between nature and the digital world. It’s a gentle nudge to disconnect, if only for a moment, and to find peace in the sea’s timeless rhythm.

This painting has a floating frame in whitewash colour, in size 120 cm (W) x 100 cm (H) x 4.3 cm (D).
