A Bird in the hand symbolises freedom. Stories of people obtaining caged animals and releasing them have always appealed to me and while most of us take our freedom for granted the same is not always true for the wildlife all around us. This colourful painting is one of a series in which I was experimenting with breaking the conventional manner of framing a watercolour within the matting so that some components of the work pop out of the matte right to the edge of the frame.
