This is not an anti-American piece. It is my attempt to understand the origin of the hostility towards reform of controls on firearms in the US. As a foreigner living outside the US, the 'debate' has never made any sense to me since there doesn’t really seem much to argue about in terms of the statistics - however the rage with which politicians, lobbyists and commentators oppose even the most basic of improvements to the gun control regime suggests something visceral, deep seated and old.
