I am particularly attracted to colours, textures and stillness within my environment and immerse myself in these details during the painting process. I enjoyed showcasing these elements specifically through this body of artwork in 2019 related to coast lines around the Bass Coast of Victoria. I feel this painting - 'Curious' was one of the most interesting paintings in the series! I really enjoyed the challenge of trying to capture the same 'curious' textures that are found on the sand and in rock pools left by little marine creatures. I used my fingers to literally rub away the surface of paint from the under colour layer. It was definitely quite a labour-intensive painting, made up of many layers. However I was thrilled with the delicacy I was able to maintain at a larger scale to showcase (what looks like) an abstraction of colour and life found within the shallows of the coast.
I try to capture subtle nuances of tone and light to describe the form and colour within my paintings, by using generous, confident marks and adequate volume of paint. Sometimes in layers or with more immediate strokes.
