It is an interesting contradiction in the Australian myth that the ‘Outback’ is seen as quintessential to our national identity, yet the overwhelming majority of the population live on the coast.
The cities continue to expand driven by our pathological desire to cling to the coast.
Huddled is a reflection of the contradiction, the colours represent the various landscapes of Australia and the relativity each of them has to the Australian identity.
Painted in part as a response to the floods in 2021 and 2022 and the damage done in the most populated areas, due in no small part to the building of homes on flood plains. Subdivisions happening in locations in response to peoples demands, rather than the landscape and environment.
The image is painted on MDF left over from a shop fit out on Sydney Road Coburg.
